message from our president
Welcome to Phi Delta Epsilon – TN Alpha!
When our Phi Delta Epsilon chapter was established at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville three years ago by our chapter coordinator, Ashley Wells, the goal was simple: create a welcoming and supportive space for pre-med students. Since then, our chapter has grown into a community where students encourage one another academically, professionally, and personally while also giving back to the Knoxville community. Becoming a member of PhiDE means joining a lifelong “Phamily,” where the connections and support extend well beyond your undergraduate years. I’m excited to introduce you to our chapter and share what makes Phi Delta Epsilon such a meaningful organization at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
My name is Colin Johannes, and I am a Junior studying Biological Sciences as a member of the Chancellor’s Honors Program. As an out-of-state student myself, I knew nobody going to UTK, and I remember feeling pretty isolated my freshman year. That was until I met a PhiDE member who told me that I should apply to the Spring cycle. I was initially uncertain, but I ended up deciding to apply, and it has been the best decision I have made as an undergraduate.
PhiDE allowed me to push myself out of my comfort zone and form new relationships that will last a lifetime. My goal throughout my time as a member of PhiDE has thus been to provide that same sense of community and welcoming environment to others in similar situations who may be feeling overwhelmed. Being a pre-med student can be extremely stressful, so it is incredibly beneficial to try to surround yourself with others who are in the same boat. Even the simplicity of seeing a fellow member in class and sitting next to them can help provide a sense of support and reassurance.
It can be difficult to avoid comparing ourselves to others, but PhiDE has helped me remember that we are all at different stages in our medical journey and has supported me in discovering my own path. Being a member of PhiDE has provided me guidance in managing my courseload, finding research and shadowing opportunities, studying for the MCAT, and even just expanding my knowledge and understanding of the field of medicine. PhiDE is rooted in fostering a noncompetitive environment, and it is evident in the way that all of our members genuinely want to see each other succeed. I have witnessed with my own eyes countless examples of our members not only congratulating others for their achievements, but also helping lift them up when they face challenges. The biggest takeaway from my experience as a member has been the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people with diverse perspectives who share a passion for medicine. PhiDE has continued to grow tremendously over the years thanks to the dedication of our members, chairs, officers, advisors, and alumni, all of whom make up a community that I am proud to call home.
My experience in PhiDE has been incredibly rewarding, and I hope to help others find the same sense of support and belonging that I did. If you’re looking for a community that will encourage you throughout your pre-med journey, take this as a sign to apply. We are so excited to meet you and would love to have you join our Phamily!
